The clinic faced resistance from religious groups in the midst of political tensions in Jamaica. Regardless, Dr and Mrs Jacobs with the help of funders, medical personnel, public health nurses and community health aides, persisted and ensured the development and continuity of the organization.

"The jungle has the highest rates of teen pregnancies and death during childbirth in Peru," said Stefanie. "These are national problems that affect the most vulnerable people. It was a wake-up call for me."

Latin America and the Caribbean has the second highest rate of adolescent pregnancies in the world. Nearly 40% of women become pregnant before the age of twenty, and 1 in 5 births are to adolescent women. Pregnancy is the leading cause of death for women ages 15-44 years old.
